Is The Miniature Pinscher The Right Dog For Your Family?
Posted by Ned D'Agostino
What’s the first thing you think of when you hear about the Miniature Pinscher? Many think he’s a miniature Doberman. Others think he’s simply yappy and tends to bite. Owners of this breed can tell you none of that is true.
What the Min Pin really is is an intelligent dog that is extremely loyal and intelligent, and yes, full of energy. It’s no wonder this breed has been given the nickname “The King of the Toys.”
So let’s talk about some of the traits of this breed. Min Pins definitely have an attitude. Although they only weigh 8-12 pounds they certainly have the mentality of a much bigger dog. This breed is courageous well beyond its size. Just look at his high stepping gait and see how he holds his head high. You can’t help but notice how proud this dog seems.
Combine the pride with the Miniature Pinscher’s fierce loyalty to his owner and his tremendous courage, and you have a great watchdog. But in all fairness, they can also be a handful.
That’s why it’s so important for a Min Pin owner to make sure the dog knows early on who is in charge. The Miniature Pinscher will think he is until he realizes otherwise. And because he’s so cute and comical, you may be tempted to let him get away with the occasional bad behavior. Do this and your dog will become a tyrant, running your home the way he sees fit. But don’t let this tendency bother you because Min Pins are very intelligent and easy to train.
And if trained properly they are incredible pets. They are loving, loyal and very playful. And quite simply, they are fun to watch. They are the stand up comedians of the dog world.
Remember we mentioned that the Miniature Pinscher is good with children. There’s a catch. Because the breed is very sturdy and of course playful, kids can have a tendency to play too rough. Min Pins aren’t fragile, but they are only 10 pounds. Children need to keep this in mind because as we said, they certainly act like they weigh more.
We briefly mentioned loyalty earlier. There are very few dogs that are more loyal than a Min Pin. And although his tendency is to become extremely attached on one person in particular, he will get along well with everyone in your family.
If you want a pet to entertain you, love you, be loyal to you, and just be fun to be around, the Miniature Pinscher would be a great choice. The breed remains very playful even into its old age. You may think you need a lot of energy to keep up with them, and to a certain extent that’s true. But they love to play by themselves with you watching. And while they do need exercise, because of their size they can get plenty of it just running around your home or apartment.
And if you want a lap dog when play time is finished, they’re happy to play that role as well. And any dog that’s loyal, fun, loving and easy to care for sounds like the perfect family pet.
